About the conference

This conference, organised by the NAM (Non-Aligned Movement) Institute for the Empowerment of Women, seeks to address the impact of conflict and displacement on the health and well-being of women. It also provides a platform to explore more effective measures and programmes to protect them as well as design more strategic  programmes to enhance their health and well-being.

Ultimately, the conference hopes to be able to set the wheels in motion towards engaging displaced women in decision-making regarding their safety and well-being, as well as see their participation post-conflict reconstruction.

The health and well-being of women in crisis

THIRTY MILLION – that’s the estimated number of women the world over who have been displaced from their homes.

Every year, tens of thousands more join those already living in flux due to wars, political upheaval or natural disasters. In such circumstances, these women face despair and destroyed livelihoods, and all they want is safety for themselves and their families. What they often face instead is gender abuse and exploitation in the hands of those tasked with ensuring their well-being.

Expert Group Meetings

During conflict and displacement, large segments of a community often fall under the radar of laws that would otherwise safeguard their protection and well-being. Women and children are especially vulnerable and become the target of exploitation and sexual violence. Refugees and internally displaced women need better laws and governance to protect their rights.

The Expert Group Meetings will see proponents for better legislation and enforcement come together to discuss a framework for better guidelines for effective implementation and monitoring of legislation, as well defining areas of concern.

This will primarily include:

1) Gender violence
2) Economic opportunity
3) Education
4) Reproductive health
